Developing Sustainable Augmented Reality Environments and their Impact on the Cultural Concepts of Young People
Abstract
Increasing awareness of cultural concepts in the current era has become a necessity to address the cultural challenges faced by young people, and augmented reality is an important technology that can be used to develop sustainable environments that can be used to promote cultural concepts. Augmented Reality (AR) technology is one of the important technologies that can be used to develop sustainable environments that can be used to promote cultural concepts. Therefore, the current research aimed to examine the impact of a sustainable augmented reality-based environment on enhancing elementary school students' awareness of Islamic cultural concepts. The augmented reality-based sustainable environment in the current research was based on the possibility of generating digital objects using augmented reality applications from some images and barcodes that are integrated into the school walls, classroom doors, the school courtyard, the computer lab, and some photo essays on cultural concepts, in addition to specially developed tasks to raise awareness of Islamic cultural concepts. The research relied on the quasi-experimental method to compare the two research groups, where the experimental group is taught using a sustainable augmented reality-based environment, and the control group using the usual method based on awareness meetings. The research sample consisted of (60) elementary school students, who were randomly distributed to the two research groups (30 students in each group). A 24-item Islamic culture awareness test was developed. The results showed that the experimental group that used the augmented reality-based sustainable environment had an advantage over the control group in terms of developing awareness of Islamic culture. The research recommended the need to expand teacher training on the use of AR environments in the educational process, especially in the development of concepts.
