Abstract

Evidence-based care is a standard practice in medicine, yet patient clothing is often overlooked in scientific research. Current patient inappropriate clothing renders patients vulnerable, diminishes their sense of dignity, coverage, and modesty. Therefore, the aim of this research is to evaluate current the clothing designated for psychiatric patients and identify the challenges they face in performing various daily activities while residing in psychiatric facilities. This evaluation aims to provide design suggestions based on feedback from mental health practitioners and nurses. To achieve this objective, 12 healthcare practitioners working in different hospitals in Saudi Arabia (Abha, Al-Madinah, and Jeddah) were selected, and a qualitative approach using interview methods was applied to assess the current clothing from both functional and aesthetic perspectives. The results indicate that the current clothing does not satisfy healthcare providers and requires addressing to enhance both functional and aesthetic aspects, aiming to improve the patient experience during treatment and healthcare providers' experience while delivering care. Additionally, the results yielded a set of ideas that can be utilized in future designs for psychiatric patient attire.
